Meta 2.5.6
Meta 2.5.6 for Mac
Nightbirdsevolve’s audio metadata editor for messy ripped vinyl, store downloads, and mixed FLAC or MP3 libraries on a Mac.
One sidebar for a whole selection
Drop a folder of tracks into the window, or open files from Finder. Highlight an album or a compilation that still has empty artist fields and treat the sidebar as a shared workspace. Change album, year, genre, or artwork once and the write lands on every selected file; the vendor describes edits as immediate, without a separate Save command. Clicking a field name opens batch string transforms, copy and paste, and CSV exchange with Numbers or Excel when you need to move a column of titles elsewhere.
Specialized editors handle awkward values: BPM, ISO 8601 dates, and multiline lyrics or comments. Custom sidebar layouts hide tags you do not need that session standard, extended, publishing, classical, or podcasts. Metadata preferences choose which containers get written ID3v1, ID3v2.3 or 2.4, iTunes MP4 atoms, Vorbis comments, APE so a Cyrillic library can target ID3v2.4 with UTF-8 or UTF-16 instead of a legacy encoding that garbles names in the Music app.
Artwork, Discogs, and path patterns
When covers are missing, Tag Finder queries Discogs from inside the app: filter by CD, vinyl, or file, pick a preferred image size, and apply art without opening a browser. Drag-and-drop also works for covers you already have. Scale, crop, and compress keep embedded JPEGs from bloating a FLAC tree. After tags look right, rename files from a token pattern, create nested folders with slash-delimited tokens, or pull tags back out of filenames. A Mixed Editor shows differing values per group when a selection is not uniform useful before you stamp one album title over a mixed folder.
Find and Replace searches tags with plain text, words, or regular expressions and can reuse capture groups. Track numbers can be assigned after you drag rows into play order. Built-in file tools move, preview, reveal, and remove items; playlist and tag CSV import and export cover hand-offs. The app talks to Music, legacy iTunes, and Doppler so library apps see the same files you just tagged.
Formats, price, and this build
Supported containers include MP3, MP4, M4A, M4B, FLAC, Ogg, Opus, Speex, AIFF, WAV, and DSF or DSDIFF. The Mac App Store lists a $22.99 one-time purchase, macOS 10.13 or later on Apple Silicon and Intel, and seven languages. It is a tagger, not a player or a fingerprinting auto-tagger: Discogs lookup still needs a human pick, and the Music app Get Info pane remains enough if you only fix one song. In version 2.5.6, Character Substitutions apply only to rename and Create Directories not to every converter so convert-to-tags no longer rewrites strings through that map.
