Import, style, preview, then generate
You download the app for free, drop in a DOCX, and Vellum builds the book structure: title page, contents, chapters. Add copyright and back matter in the navigator. Pick a Book Style and it applies across every chapter, including ones you add later. Preview shows ebook devices and the print spread at once; edits update immediately. When you are ready to publish, Generate writes the store files in one pass so ebook and print stay in sync after a typo fix.
Pay when you generate, not when you try
Building and previewing have no time limit. Generating needs a one-time license: Vellum Ebooks at 199.99 USD, or Vellum Press at 249.99 USD for unlimited ebooks and print interiors. After 30 days, Ebooks-to-Press is 69.99 USD. Updates to the app are free. The license is for one person; you can Restore it on a second Mac you own, but not share it with an assistant. Support is for the license holder, even if you format for someone else.
Ventura floor, Golden Gate, and the Mac-only wall
Official requirements are macOS 13 through the current Golden Gate release, Apple silicon or Intel, about 200 MB to install. There is no iPad or native Windows build; 180g says they are focused on Mac. Version 4.1.5 is the compatibility pass for macOS 27. If you need Windows-native tools or InDesign-level layout, this is the wrong product. If you want Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, and a matching paperback from one file, it is the usual Mac path.
