Comic Life 4.2.2
Comic Life 4.2.2 for Mac
A page-layout studio for turning a Photos library or any dropped picture into ballooned comic pages, visual diaries, and simple how-to sheets without opening a full illustration suite.
Pick a template, drop photos, point the tails
New document, then one of the sixty-plus plasq templates (or a blank page). The built-in browser pulls from your photo library; drag a shot into a panel and it sizes to the frame. Instant Alpha knocks out a background when you need a cutout. The image panel is where you push the comic filters, halftones, and textures until a holiday snapshot reads as a panel instead of a snapshot. Speech goes in balloons with as many tails and bubbles as the scene needs—line-stroke or burst tails, an Envelop action that wraps a bubble around lettering, and shape operations on the outline. Captions can take a decorative opening cap and thread across a page when a narrator runs long.
Lettering, a script well, and facing pages
Sound-effect words sit on a path in Line lettering mode; block titles can be single- or multiline, with optional 3D styling. If you write first, the script editor holds the story so you can drag lines onto the page and apply script styles instead of retyping every balloon. Facing-page view, master pages, pin/lock/group, and reusable templates cover multi-page books. More than seventy bundled fonts ship with the app; system fonts work too. Styles keep filters and balloon looks consistent across a document.
Export a book—or stay in Photos and skip this
Finished pages leave as PDF, EPUB, CBZ, or image sequences, and AirPrint can do ranges, copies, and two-sided output. The Mac App Store copy is $29.99 with Family Sharing; plasq’s store sells the same product as a one-user license for a desktop and laptop on Mac. Comic Life 3 remains the Windows and older-macOS line (10.10.3). This is not a pencil-and-ink drawing app: you stage photos and type, you do not draw the figures. Version 4.2.2, posted on the App Store on 4 September 2026, lists only bug fixes and UI improvements. The listing requires macOS 11.3 or later. Languages on the store page are English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish—Japanese from older Comic Life 3 builds is not listed here.
