QuickTime cannot play MKV files or many subtitle formats. VLC plays almost anything, but it looks and feels like a Windows app on Mac. IINA fixes both problems. It plays nearly every format and looks like a real Mac app. IINA uses the mpv engine for playback. It adds a clean macOS interface on top, with dark mode, Touch Bar support, and working Picture-in-Picture. You open a file and it just plays.
It supports MP4, MKV, AVI, HEVC, AV1, WebM, and FLAC with no extra codecs needed. Hardware acceleration keeps 4K and HDR video smooth without draining battery. Subtitle support is strong. Load external SRT, ASS, or SSA files, and IINA detects the text encoding on its own. You can also search and download subtitles from inside the app.
Playback speed runs from 0.25x to 16x with pitch correction. A/B loop repeats a section on command. Basic filters like deinterlacing and color adjustment are built in. You can paste a YouTube or Vimeo link and play it directly. IINA also connects to NAS drives, Plex, and Jellyfin for network streaming. A plugin system adds extra tools like bookmarks and Jellyfin browsing. None of this is required to use the app.
