Lifespan is a macOS menu bar app designed to track the remaining useful life of flash drives. It displays the remaining life of your solid-state drive (SSD), and we hope to soon support CompactFlash and CFast devices.
Lifespan is designed to address the growing use and dependence on flash storage. If you need to maximize the use of SSDs or other flash-based storage devices, you can benefit from knowing how much usable capacity remains on these drives.
Knowing the remaining useful life of a flash-based storage device is crucial, especially in scenarios where these devices are heavily used. Most flash-based storage devices store your data in non-volatile NAND solid-state memory. Each cell of this flash memory can be “programmed and erased” a limited number of times. Drives can have fewer than 2,000 or more than 10,000 program erase cycles, or P/E cycles, depending on the type and quality of the NAND chips used. For a mid-range SSD, this translates to around 100 TB of useful life, but this can vary greatly in either direction. In any case, there will come a point for every flash-based storage device when it can no longer store data, and the device will fail. Lifespan is a macOS menu bar app designed to track the remaining useful life of flash drives. It will display the remaining lifespan of your solid-state drive (SSD), and we hope to soon support CompactFlash and CFast devices. The Lifespan menu displays the current lifespan and displays a warning when the device falls below the remaining useful life threshold. Armed with this information, these flash-based storage devices can be decommissioned before the risk of data loss becomes probable.
Key Features:
– SimpleBecause Lifespan is a macOS menu bar app that’s incredibly easy to use. Each drive is listed in the menu, and you can see the usage percentage of each flash drive.
– ExpandableInternal and Thunderbolt storage devices are supported by default. Adding support for USB devices is as easy as installing a driver available directly from the Lifespan app.
